San Benito is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The first people to live in San Benito were ranch hands who came overland from New Mexico in 1827. They began to build permanent homes soon after they arrived and started trading with other villages and towns along the San Antonio River. In 1848, Mexican General José de la Cruz y Costilla founded a new settlement just upstream from San Benito on what is now known as West Side Drive. The costilla family name comes from the fact that they donated land for the settlement and built many of its structures themselves. The costilla family also became major landowners in adjacent Hudspeth County through their ownership of some of the most important rancho grants within that area. In 1892, San Benito incorporated as a municipality under state law because it felt that being an independent community would give it more control over its affairs and better serve its residents. As time went on, however, some residents objected to this move because they felt that municipal government didn't have enough power to address their concerns about local issues such as school financing or infrastructure development." In 1984, some citizens of San Benito successfully petitioned then-Governor Dick Durbin to make it a "City" instead of an "Unincorporated Parish". This change gave city status to San Benito and opened up many opportunities for growth both physically and economically due to easier access to services such as water and sewer systems; increased access to education;and more professional jobs brought into town by businesses which moved into downtown when City Hall was built on First Street between Hearn Avenue and Lamar Boulevard (now University Way). San Benito has been a part of Texas for over 300 years. The town is located in the Lone Star State and was founded by Rancho San Antonio, which was named after the Spanish mission of Santa Anna in 1821. The original grantees of Rancho San Antonio were José de la Peña, Manuel Jiménez, Pedro de Lugo and Fernando de la Garza. In 1851, San Benito became a census-designated place (CDP) and it incorporated as a city on December 15, 1954. The history of San Benito goes back to when the land that now makes up the town was first rangeland owned by Hidalgo County. A grant from Spain in 1798 gave land east of what is now downtown to Josefa Maria Ramírez y Sánchez for her husband’s rancho. After Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, Mexican officials granted Rancho San Antonio to Francisco Pico de la Vega and his brother Felipe Herrera y Valdez on November 2, 1823. La Garza acquired additional grants in 1827 and 1830; however, these were never expanded because he leased them out at various intervals until he sold them all to Joséfina Bárcena Crespi in 1861 for $8 million dollars. In 1865, following the American Civil War, General Zachary Taylor ordered Ulysses S Grant’s army to march through Texas on their way northward into Canada. As they passed through San Benito Valley near present day Midlothian Airport they stopped at one of Pico de la Vega’s ranches for dinner on October 15th before continuing their march the next day. For many years after this event there was speculation as to where Taylor stops during his march which would have ended up being about 20 miles south of Midlothian Airport at Ranchero Zacatecas that night but no proof exists that he actually did stop there or even stayed overnight! It is interesting to note that both Grant and Ulysses S Grant had Irish roots so this incident likely had nothing whatsoever to do with geographical accuracy! After Mexican independence from Spain came an annexation by Mexico City which meant cattle drives began across country creating an economy around herds of big game animals needed for meat production along with cotton farming within Mexico City proper instead of outside its limits like it had been prior resulting in much resentment among Texan ranchers who saw themselves as superior beings due their own lands having been handed down uninterruptedly their entire lives! This led directly to two wars fought over grazing rights within state borders between Texans and Mestizos aka Native Americans who lived adjacent thereto including some known today as Anglo Mexicans or “Anglos”! Ultimately these conflicts created what are today called Hispanic areas such as El Paso & Juárez states while also dividing Anglo Mexicans into competing fractions/groups whose descendants still live together today although living separately economically under different social codes! Although less well-known than other aspects related thereto such as cultural clashes or violence ensuing between groups over residential boundaries – these events nevertheless have left lasting impacts on contemporary society both within individual communities and nationally!! On December 15th 1954 San Benito became a city when its incorporation made it one of just six cities statewide included therein when Texas seceded from America!!! As mentioned earlier upon incorporation it became home to many successful businesses including ITT Corporation (now Dell) as well as numerous high tech firms including Infosys & Wipro!!! Today several large office buildings sit atop former agricultural land once used for hogsraising & horse breeding making this area very vibrant indeed!!! Consequently much attention is given not just to history but current development too – making it always an enjoyable visit especially if you enjoy exploring old architecture district such as Adobe Walls Chapel etc…
The first Europeans to glimpse the San Benito Peninsula were Spanish explorers in 1519. The area was part of the Alamo Missions, and it was during this time that Spanish traders began to explore the peninsula. In 1821, Mexico gained independence from Spain, and San Benito became a Mexican territory. The following year, Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican-American War, and San Benito reverted back to U.S. territory. A railroad was built through San Benito in 1887, and in 1925, the state of Texas ceded control of San Benito to California as part of their State Line Treaty.
