Many people from San Bernardino County traveled to see this new location and some remain residents today including members of Congress Pedro Menendez y Cubas (Districts 2 & 3), Rubén Galarraga (1st District), Joaquín Murillo Karamazov (Attorney General), Carlos Romero Rangel (2nd District), Rosa DeLauro Santos (6th District) among others. It was also at La Hacienda Castro that Dr. Manuel García Blanco established a small hospital known as el Hospital Civil in 1859 which later became San Antonio Regional Medical Center
San Benito began as a small settlement in 1876, when Mexican immigrants arrived seeking refuge from the U.S. Census of 1870 which had counted them only as Native Americans. The town was founded on the banks of the Brazos River, and quickly became a center for cotton farming and ranching. In 1912, San Benito became a city when it was annexed by Austin. Today, San Benito is a bedroom community located in Austin proper, with little to no interaction between its residents and the larger metropolitan area.
