When the Texas Rangers set out from Fort Worth in 1881, they were looking for a new place to build a base. They were tired of fighting Mexico and wanted something closer to the East Coast so they could control more of that territory. The Rangers found San Benito on the edge of missions country. It was a small town with few people and no money. But the Rangers decided it would be a good place to start their own station because it had plenty of water and grazing land. The Ranger Station at San Benito lasted until 1887 when it burned down. But the town still has some reminders of its time as a Ranger Station. There are three buildings that remain: the old barracks, used by officers; the ranger house, which is now used as office space; and an old well which is still used for pumping water today.

In 1960, San Benito was annexed by Houston following a referendum vote by its citizens. Since then, it has seen continued growth as Houston’s second largest city after downtownHouston. Today, San Benito is an important cultural center for the Houston metropolitan area with many theaters and galleries located within its limits.
The first people to live in San Benito County were the Native Americans. In 1821, Mexican land grants were made to Anglo settlers. The first post office was established in 1827 and named San Miguel. The name was changed to San Benito in 1848 because of the increased population and its location on a bend in the Rio Grande River. A cotton gin was built at what is now known as Glenwood Springs around 1850 and became one of the leading markets for cottonseed oil in Texas. Railroads reached San Benito County by 1870, making it an important agricultural area. By 1900, over 50% of all agricultural products grown in Texas were produced here. The county seat moved from Glenwood Springs to Pecos City in 1906 due to conflicts over water resources with nearby Amarillo.
