The city of San Antonio, Texas was founded on November 3, 1836 by New Mexico entrepreneur José Joaquín de Armas. The town site was selected because it had a good location for trading with the Mexican state of Chihuahua. When General Sam Houston's army reached the area in 1837, he ordered his men to burn all the villages and towns in the area before moving on. The first settlement in what is now San Antonio was made up of families who had set out from Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, in hopes of finding new land to settle. By 1840, there were over 100 residents living in what is today San Antonio. In 1845, two years after Houston's victory at the Battle of Alamo Heights, San Antonio became an official municipality under Mexican rule.
