By 1920 – during World War I – it had become one of America’s leading military bases with over 60 percent male soldiers stationed there; today it still houses many troops garrisoned there (including 4500 personnel at Fort Bliss). Reflecting this growth, businesses opened up all across downtown including several banks which are still standing today: First National Bank (1899), American Express (1910), Texaco (1936) and KFC (2006). Many iconic buildings dating back to these years have come down such as City Hall Annex Building erected by First National Bank employees following prohibition raids by law enforcement officers during Prohibition days; also significant are Music Hallheights built between 1925-27 by local builder Harry Chandler after a competition won by John Lennon who was then working as an advertising agent for Christian Brothers School District #1; later renamed The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema with Wyatt Earp playing opposite Marilyn Monroe at their premiere here on December 15th 1956 headlined by “The Hustler” starring Don Johnson & Dean Martin & Sammy Davis Jr.; finally just north off IH35 near UTSA’s Campus Martius Hospital was once home to UTSA’s Geisha Club which offered exotic dancers services beginning in 1922 followed by operations starting at nearly every major university campus throughout Southwestern USA through out 1966 before closing permanently due to Dole Food Company ownership changes
The San Antonio Missions were founded in 1736 by the Franciscan Fathers. The missions were a response to the Spanish Colonial authority's efforts to drive the Creek and Maya people out of their territory in what is now Texas. In 1821, California became part of Mexico after its independence from Spain. The mission system was abandoned in 1843 when most of southern Texas became part of the United States. In 1845, San Antonio was designated as the first capital of Texas and remains its current capital today.
