After Mexico lost its independence from Spain in 1824 San Antonians voted against joining Texas while they remained under Mexican rule until 1845 when they became part of the United States following their war with Mexico. In 1840s two brothers started cattle ranching near today’s downtown San Antonio with help from American colonists such as Sam Houston who had purchased lands east of the river (today’s East Side). This led to increased trade through missions that linked Missions Concepción and Austin with Presidio de San Marcos (now Downtown) where goods were traded for Native Americans during the period leading up to Ulysses S Grant’s purchase of Alamo Ranch in 1865; this acquisition helped solidify Anglo support for Texans fighting for Texas Independence during the American Civil War During World War II much industrial activity took place within walking distance of many major urban centers including nearby Fort Worth and Dallas/Fort Worth Airport making it one of most important economic engines within Southwest TX throughout that era As recently as 1990 more than half a million people lived in areas adjacent or inside downtownSanAntonio limits – housing market uncertain since then but growing rapidly again despite tight regulations

Thehistory of San Antonio, Texas can be traced back to the earliest days of its settlement. The city was founded by pioneers in 1847 as a small community on the banks of the Rio Grande. At first, San Antonio was known simply as "the Town". As time passed, however, the name began to be commonly used throughout the state and country. In 1849, San Antonio became part of the Republic of Mexico under President Porfirio Díaz. This event marked a turning point for San Antonio and many other towns in Mexican America. For years, Mexicans who had fled Santa Anna's regime in Mexico City continued to hand over their wealth and influence to their new home. However, with Díaz's death in 1858 and subsequent instability in Mexico City, this period of stability ended suddenly. Soon after, violence broke out between various factions within Mexican America over succession to power. In 1862-63 alone, more than 20 villages were destroyed or depopulated due to civil warring factions. San Antonio finally attained its present form as an independent municipality on December 15th 1861 when it was created from parts of Bexar County and Medina County. At that time it had a population of only 1,000 people! The city quickly grew; by 1865 it had reached 4200 residents! By 1870 San Antonio boasted 12 churches (10 Baptist and 2 Roman Catholic), 30 schools (including one private academy), 36 hotels/motels including 10 which were dedicated exclusively to American tourists (7 operated by Germans and 3 by Americans), 400 businesses (such as groceries stores and dry goods dealers), 2000 citizens employed in various trades or services (including 100 bankers/loan sharks) and an additional 3000 residents scattered throughout surrounding rural areas subject only to municipal ordinance governing such matters as fire prevention codes etc . . . During these years there were also numerous major events which molded the character of SanAntonio: Reconstruction Erabeginnings with passage of The Civil Rights bill into law on August 14th 1865 led by US congressman James Kenedy; World War II saw military activity here from 1939-1945;1968 annexation of Austin led by Governor George Wallace;and most recently Hurricane Harvey caused extensive damage here during September 2017
In 1836, San Antonio was founded as the first American settlement in Texas. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Red River and its access to trade with Mexico and Central America. By 1850, San Antonio had a population of over 100,000 people. The city was renamed Austin in 1871 after General Stephen Austin, the founder of Texas. In 1959, Austin became the capital of Texas and San Antonio became its largest city.
