San Antonio, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and seat of San Antonio County. It was founded in 1836 as the territorial capital of New Mexico and became the capital of the Republic of Texas following its loss to Mexico in 1846. Mexican forces destroyed both missions on September 16, 1827 during the military campaigns known as La Huelga de Guadalupe (the Battle for Guerrero). A new mission was built at this site called Nuestra Senora del Rosario (Our Lady Of Rosary) due to increasing tensions between Mexicans and Anglo settlers over religious affiliation. In 1836, New Mexico became an independent republic under American rule; as a result, San Antonio became its capital. With increased trade with Santa Fe through El Paso across The Rio Grande River they decided to name their new town "Anahuac," meaning crossingroads or junction point between different regions within New Mexico/Mexico City because there were several such crossings nearby including Pecos National Park just north of where modern-day Anahuac stands today. After losing its independence from Mexico, San Antonio served as an American military base until 1898 during Spanish–American War when it came under control of United States forces which reoccupied it During World War II General Douglas MacArthur stationed his headquarters here before his breakout from Japan into Manchuria
In 1821, the Mexican government ceded land to the United States in exchange for a peace treaty. The area now includes San Antonio and its neighbor Austin. San Antonio was founded by Spanish explorers in 1799 as Bexar de la Cruz. It became an American town in 1836 when the Republic of Texas was established.
