One interesting fact about this city is that it's home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: an old mission called La Candelaria and a new church called la Iglesia de las Madres de la Patria (Church of Our Mothers of Liberty).

In 1845, San Angelo was established as the site of a new town. The original town was located on the banks of the San Antonio River, about twenty miles north-west of present-day Austin. The name “San Angelo” was given to the settlement by General Sam Houston because he thought it would be a good place to build a military post. A courthouse and jail were built in the early years of the town, but these facilities were soon converted into homes. The early days of San Angelo were very difficult for its citizens. There were few jobs available and there was little money to be had anywhere else. The people did what they could to make ends meet. They raised crops, hunted animals, and fished in their own local rivers and streams. The townsfolk built their first houses from logs that they found lying around in the woods. In time, they also started building barns and other buildings using materials that they acquired from elsewhere in Texas or from outside of San Angelo itself. By 1895, San Angelo had a population of about fifty residents. Over time, however, problems began to arise with regard to crime and traffic congestion on Highway 101A (now I-10). These problems became increasingly challenging as more people kept moving into SanAngelo without taking advantage of its economic opportunities or infrastructure developments. In response to this situation, Mayor John Fenton submitted plans for an expansion project which eventually resulted in the construction of two larger shopping malls – One near downtown and one east of Interstate 10 near Lake Worth Road – as well as many small businesses and residences within walking distance of both shopping malls alone! It is significant that Mayor Fenton took this opportunity to address issues head-on rather than waiting until things got outof hand; this type of proactive management style has been typical among mayors during ourperiod here in Texas! This example set an excellent example for future mayors who may face similar challenges while trying to develop successful communities statewide!
