By 1916, A&P employed one hundred people and its store had a capacity for two thousand customers per day! In 1938, Sam Rayburn became Speaker of the House of Representatives after serving as Lieutenant Governor of Texas for four years during Franklin D Roosevelt's first term as President. While Speaker, he established an office within the House called the Subcommittee on Commerce and Labor which focused on public safety issues related to labor unions! In 1942 when World War II began with Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor, SanAngelo became known as "the breadbasket of America". Residents contributed significantly to military efforts both through volunteering their time (such as being guards at local airfields) or by donating food items such as canned goods or gasoline to fuel airplanes flying into battle! After Japan's surrender in 1945, many families returned home but many others remained behind because they had friends or family living elsewhere who needed help providing for them financially! With war ending came new opportunities for businesses like A&P Tobacco Company which saw its stock price skyrocket due to demand from shoppers looking for bargains! Finally able to rest easy knowing their products were helping contribute directly to American victory over Japanese aggression!

The first white people to set foot in what is now San Angelo were French missionaries who arrived there during the 17th century for trade with Spain; they called it Ixchel (possibly meaning "place where water measurements are taken"). In 1836, General Sam Houston sent a group of Texas Rangers to defeat Mexico's Santa Anna Expedition under Mexican general Antonio López de Santa Anna and took possession of much Spanish land east of the Rio Grande that had been seized during that campaign. On July 8, 1836, Houston appointed James Bowie as his lieutenant governor and namesake for this new territory along the river which would eventually become Tarrant County.[4] Bowie soon renamed San Angelo after himself because he felt its isolation would make it difficult for Mexico or any other power to attack him or control it directly.[5][6][7][8] In 1870, San Angelo became an independent town when it separated from neighboring Conroe to become its own municipality;[9][10][11] however, annexation by Dallas followed in 1907. However, annexation by Austin did not take place until 1915 due to political opposition within then-Governor George Bush's administration; Austin instead annexed White Oak Lake Township which lying just south of present day San Antonio proper and included much older settlements including Mission Reach (now Bird Hills) before finally annexing all but Mission Reach into Austin in 1925.[12][13]:iii Furthermore despite being newly annexed into Austin numerous businesses closed their doors within months due largely to high costs associated with moving attorneys and other government officials required for incorporation into a new municipality while still living inside Travis County; many businesses reopened once annexation occurred but prices increased dramatically due to increased competition from nearby Arlington Heights about 6 miles (10 km) north on Interstate 10[14]:vii By 1930 only one percent of business employees lived in Austin proper while more than eighty percent resided outside its boundaries within Travis County; this trend continued through most pre-integration years beyond 1930 with few exceptions: White Oak Lake Township annexed into Austin 1960 remaining an enclave within Travis County until 2003 when annexation resulted in full incorporation intoAustin following 15 years without any business closures).[15]:ix In recent years there have been some efforts made by local officials(specifically Mayor Greg Abbott)to revive some aspects [of historic importance such as restaurants serving Spanish victuals such as Paella], although no definitive progress has yet been made

By 1860, San Angelo had more than 2,000 residents and was represented in the Texas Legislature.
