The growth of San Angelo led to increased development in nearby Junction City and Round Rock, which were also admitted as cities that year. Between 1872 and 1896, San Angelo's population grew from 3,000 residents to 27,000 residents; this growth included an influx of Irish immigrants who had come for mining jobs in the area. In 1896, however, san antonio annexed El Paso County and its population fell below 10,000 people for the first time since its incorporation as a city; this event is generally seen as marking the beginning of declining popularity forSanAngelo among Texans due to its distance from major metropolitan areas. In 1932, during World War II,[4] San Angelo served as one of several Texas towns located within military camps located along I-10 and FM 19606[5] due to restrictions placed on civilian populations by then Governor John Connally.[6] Withdrawing those restrictions following World War II allowed more involvement by local businesses and citizens in their municipal government;[7] after reassessment of the community's importance following World War II,[8][9]SanAngelo has experienced modest growth rates throughout its history with a recent peak at 21% annual population growth rate reported between 2000-2010[10][11].
