Its attractions include four lovely golf courses- nine par 3 layouts totaling 281 yards each- three restaurants including The Ritz-Carlton Hotel & Casino which offers championship golf games nightly during 2006 Tour Championship week; The Fillmore Ballroom which hosts country music concerts annually; and numerous shopping centers including one with more than 350 outlet stores nationally (one stoplight from downtown). With 1 million residents within its limits making it home to some 2 dozen businesses employing over 120 people -San Angelo is quickly becoming one of America's fastest growing communities
The city of San Angelo was founded in 1836 by John Lloyd Stephens. The town grew rapidly, and by 1859 had a population of 10,000. It was the capital of the Mexican state of Texas from 1846 to 1850. After the American Civil War, San Angelo became an independent republic and continued to grow. In 1907, it became the 36th county seat of McLennan County.
