The history of firearms in San Angelo, Texas can be traced back to the early 1800s. At that time, handguns were mostlybach-fired pistols made of various woods and other materials. The first guns to be manufactured in San Angelo were muskets. In 1836, John Lubbock founded the first school in San Angelo and was the first teacher in what is now downtown San Angelo. He designed and built a small cannon called the "Lubbock Rifle." This gun was used by Captain James Bowie to fight against Santa Anna's forces at Palo Alto Creek. In 1840, Antonio Lopez opened a blacksmith shop on Third Street which became one of the most important businesses in town. In 1852, Lorenzo Capote opened a grocery store on Seventh Street which became one of the most popular stores in town. In 1859, Isaac Bowen established a flour mill on Elm Street which became one of the most important mills in town. In 1865, Wm Hogg established an oil refinery on Elm Street which became one of the most important oil refineries in Texas at that time. In 1870, Rufus King established a bakery on Second Avenue which became one of the most popular bakeries in town. In 1872, Simeon Pemberton acquired land north of Main Street and began developing it into what is now downtown San Angelo. He named his new development "Pemberton Place" after himself and his father-in-law Rufus King Sr., who had donated many acres for this purpose. In 1876, Don McCullough opened a general store on Fourth Street which became one of the most successful stores in town at that time. In 1886, Jno McGee set up a meat market on First Avenue which became one of the busiest meat markets in America at that time. By 1915, all these businesses had been destroyed by fire or moved away from their original locations due to increased competition from larger grocery stores and restaurants).
