In 1836, San Angelo was founded by the Mexican Missionaries. The town grew quickly and soon had a population of over 300 people. In 1840, the Mexican government designated San Angelo as the capital of Alamo County. The town began to grow rapidly again as settlers arrived from all over Texas looking for a piece of the American West. By 1849, San Angelo had grown to 2,000 people and was home to several churches and schools. The town experienced another growth spurt in 1850 when the A&M University was founded nearby. The university helped contribute to an even larger influx of settlers into San Angelo, which led to both increased property values and more businesses opening up in the town. By 1859, San Angelo had become an established community with a population of 5,300 people.
