From 1865 until 1895 it served as the capital of Comal County before becoming Austin in 1896 when that county was created from parts of Travis and Williamson counties

The city of San Angelo was founded in 1836 by General Sam Houston. The city grew rapidly due to its location at the crossing of the Sabine and Angelina Rivers, and its role as a center for trade. In 1849, San Angelo became the capital of Texas under the Provisional Government. It was renamed Austin in 1865 after Ulysses S. Grant, then president of the United States. After annexation by Mexico in 1846, San Angelo served as an important military post until it was annexed again by Texas in 1872.
