In 1836, San Angelo was founded as the county seat of Bexar County, Texas. The first courthouse in San Angelo was built in 1839. It burned down in 1840, but was rebuilt and used until it was destroyed by a fire in 1907. In 1865, the United States Congress created a military post on the Santa Anna River within present-day Austin to provide security for the Republic of Texas during the American Civil War. The post became an important staging ground for Confederate forces moving into central Texas and up the Rio Grande Valley. The town of San Angelo grew rapidly due to its location and its access to water sources; by 1870 it had a population of 4,000 people. In 1876, San Angelo became an independent city under pressure from neighboring Austin because it refused to recognize Austin's annexation of Travis County as part of the new state of Texas. On November 14,1887, a devastating fire destroyed most of downtown San Angelo; however, firefighters were able to save many buildings including the original courthouse which still stands today. The fire remains one of America's worst natural disasters; according to some estimates, it may have caused as many as $100 million in damage ($2 billion now).
