Saginaw is a small city in the Texas Panhandle, about 65 miles (100 km) east of Amarillo. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census, down from 10,664 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Amarillo–Chambers County metropolitan area. The city was founded by John Saginaw in 1874 and named for him. The first post office in Saginaw was established in 1875. In 1907, Saginaw became a town and it has since had three mayors: Harry Laughlin (1907-1910), Edwin J. Warfield (1910-1920), and Clyde Culp (1920-1922). In 1965, Saginaw became an unincorporated community when its boundaries were changed to encompass all of Chambers County east of Interstate 35W. On July 1, 1998, the City of Saginaw proper merged with the town of Lubbock to form a new city government which continues to be called "SaginAW".

Saginaw is adjacent to Wichita Falls and Denton on the north side of the Angelina River and is bordered by Lubbock to the east, Amarillo to the south, and Odessa to the west. The first European sighting of what would become Saginaw was made on November 15th, 1797 when Lieutenant James Kenedy sent a boat downriver from San Antonio with news that Spanish explorer José de Urrea had discovered an area rich in natural resources near present day Wichita Falls. This led to Saginaw's growth as a trading post on both sides of the river. After Oklahoma became part of Mexico in 1836, traders began trading here too which led to another growth period for Saginaw. In 1839, General Sam Houston acquired land northeast of town and founded Huntsville which included much of what now makes up Mid- Texan County including present day Saginaw Township - home to many small businesses today such as Pohl's Restaurant & Brewery where you can still purchase craft beer from their original downtown location back in 1907! In 1861 during American Civil War efforts by General John Buford his forces besieged Fort Worth before being driven back towards Dallas by Confederate General Robert Ewell who then built his army campground just outside Saginaw near current day Interstate 35 en route from Galveston Peninsula through Red Oak Hills into Dallas! On July 4th 1865 Union general Ulysses Grant crossed over into Mexican territory at Brownsville concurrent with an armistice ending the war between North America and South America - giving birth finally to what would become known as "Saginaw". Throughout most of its history it has been one of Southern Texas' fastest growing cities with over 20% growth rate each decade while also experiencing significant economic development due largely to its proximity to major metropolitan areas within Central Texas - spawning many small businesses today like First National Bank where you can still purchase their namesake banking products dating back to 1907!
