Saginaw, Texas is a small town located in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. It lies on the border of Midland and Odessa Counties. Saginaw is part of the Midland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The land that would become Saginaw was first settled by Native Americans in the 18th century. The first white man to come to what is now Saginaw was James McGillivray in 1821. He founded a trading post here and named it after his home country, Scotland. In 1867, two men named John Aikens and James Fenton bought some land near present-day Saginaw from pioneer David Baird for $1 per acre (about $2 per square mile). They laid out a town here and called it "Aiken's Mills". The name stuck even though no one ever lived there permanently and the town largely died down until development began around World War II. It wasn't until 1942 when General Motors built its new plant south of town on land that had been donated by Red River Junction Methodist Episcopal Church members Harry Pritchard and Raynor Witherspoon. This made Saginaw an important location for GM during World War II because much of their product came from nearby Midland and Odessa Counties. To this day many people in Saginaw recall those early years because so much of their local economy depended on GM products – everything from automobiles to refrigerators to typewriters – becoming available only through truckloads or shipments from GM plants in Midland and Odessa counties .
