In the early 1800s, Saginaw was a busy trade town. The city’s wide streets and riverfront made it easy for traders to move goods and people. In addition, the city had a strong military presence because of its location on the Red River. The city was founded by French colonists in 1795. The area that now makes up Saginaw was first inhabited by the Calumet Indians. By 1837, Saginaw had become a trading post for the Ottawa tribe of Indians. A group of American settlers came to Saginaw in 1839 and began trading with the Ottawas. In 1841, General Sam Houston invaded Texas and attacked Mexican forces marching into Texas from Mexico City. When news of Houston’s actions reached Saginaw, residents collected weapons and formed militias to protect their homes. Captain John Fenton organized a militia company in 1830 and became captain-general of local troops in 1840 after being named colonel by President James Kiefer Polk during the Mexican War (1846-48). When Texas became an American territory in February 1845, Fenton resigned his commission as captain general to join Houston’s army as colonel of artilleryman at San Jacinto Heights near Austin TX on April 6th under General Sam Houston Jr.. On October 7th,1845 General Houston crossed Buffalo Bayou at Gonzales TX with 1,500 men and 10 cannon to attack Mexico City from behind Texan lines instead of going through Mexico like he wanted to do. As soon as he got across Buffalo Bayou his army dispersed due to lack food supplies Horse units went intoMexican Territory where they were ambushed by Mexican cavalry who killed or captured most of Ulysses Grant's force including General Houston himself only 2 Americans survived out numbered 3 times 15 Horses tranquilized each unit then burned alive leaving no survivors Spanish interpreter rode back with Presidencia mexicana telling her all these events took place while she slept
