The Saginaw River forms part of the town's eastern border and enters into the Trinity River near McKinney. The first settlers in what is now Saginaw were white men from Kentucky and Tennessee who arrived in 1836 to build a trading post on the Saginaw River. In 1837, they founded what became Saginaw City. A year later, they organized a townsite here and named it for their ancestral home (Sago Parish). In 1840, when Texas was admitted to the Union as the 42nd state, Saginaw City became its capital.
