Saginaw, Texas is a town located in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, its population was 21,557. The Saginaw River forms much of the town's southern border and flows through it. The first Europeans to visit what is now Saginaw were French fur traders in 1781. In 1803, General James Kenedy founded a trading post here and named it Fort Kenedy because he had taken up residence nearby on Caton Creek. After Kenedy's death in 1806, his son-in-law, Colonel John Fenton took over responsibility for the post. In 1827, Fenton built a new fort here which became known as Fort Worth (now Dallas). In 1836, following the Mexican-American War and an attempt by General Sam Houston to retake San Antonio from Mexico, settlers began to move into Saginaw from all over Texas. By 1840s most residents had left for other parts of TX or moved away altogether because of low prices for land hereabouts and lack of available water resources caused by Chisholm Bend Dam on the Arkansas River north of town (the dam has since been replaced by Lake Austin). A few remaining families started anew but soon abandoned their efforts when they realized that farming was not possible without irrigation systems or floods – things that had not yet become common in TX at that time! Today there are only a handful of residential buildings remaining in downtown Saginaw while much original infrastructure including water towers still stand; this unique survivor tells its own story even as newer development encroaches around it at will. In 1906 local businessmen J W Helmuth & Sons organized what would become Midland Cottonseed Company with headquarters adjacent to today's First Baptist Church across Hwy 377 from downtown Saginaw - one hundred years ago today! The company prospered until World War II when war production diverted attention from cottonseed land eastward and mills closed down throughout TX leaving little economic incentive for farmers to grow corn or soybeans anyhow so offerings off local square footage alone are barely worth noting these days let alone writing about them…..
