Sachse, Texas is a city in northern Travis County, Texas. It was founded in 1881 by Augustus Sachse and is the county seat of Travis County. The population was 25,819 at the 2000 census. The name "Sachse" comes from a pioneer settler, Augustus Sachse. Sachse began as a small farming town located on the east bank of the Brazos River near present-day Marshallsville. By 1881 it had grown to be a busy community with stores, churches and schools. In 1886, Augustus Sachse donated land to build what would become the first courthouse in Travis County. A year later he also donated land for what would become the first school in that town. In 1893, when Austin became the county seat of Travis County, Sachse became its provisional capital until 1894 when Austin took over that role permanently. In 1997, Sachse was named one of "The Top 10 Towns To Live In" by Forbes magazine citing its affordable housing prices and strong economic development prospects. In 2002, Sachse was added to the National Register of Historic Places for its architecture and historical significance as a center for cotton agriculture in north Texas during Reconstruction Periods (1861-1877). In 2006 Sachse celebrated its centennial with events including an open house and parade led by Mayor John D'Alessandro
