Sachse, Texas is a small city in the U.S. state of Texas that is located in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The population was 12,716 at the 2010 census. Sachse is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex and has been called "the business capital of Texas." The city was founded in 1881 by Gustavus Wauchope Sachse as a trading post on Buffalo Bayou. The first known settler in Sachse was John A. Sutherland, who arrived in 1881 with his family from Great Britain. In 1902, German-born Wilhelm Engelhard opened what became known as Engelhard's Department Store on Elm Street near downtown Sachse. It was here that Engelhard began to sell goods such as cigars and cigarettes to settlers throughout North Texas. By 1925, Engelshard had become one of Dallas' largest retail leaders and continue to operate his store until his death in 1957. Other early merchants include Jens Ludwig (1854-1937), who operated a grocery store and clothing shop at 6th and Elm Streets; Augustus Crain (1856-1923), owner of Crain's Drug & Supply at 14th and Elm Streets; Samuel Pemberton (1857-1920), an insurance salesman from Columbus, Ohio; Harry Sells (1861-1927), proprietor of Sells Drug & Coffee House at 9th Street and Commerce Avenue; Harry Buehler (1863-1945) who ran a grocery store on Cherry Hill Drive before it closed down for bankruptcy in 1946; Frank Hinton (b 1861 d 1942) who operated a dry goods store on Main Street between 4th Avenue South and Broadway; Julius Weizenbaum (1865-) later established Famous Dutch Bakery which served refreshments during World War I.; Fenton Beal opened Beal's Mercantile Hardware Store at 2424 Elm Street in 1924.; future Mayor James Meeks Sr., son of James Meeks Jr., also started working at Beal's when he was eighteen years old while still attending college. In 1945, Wichita Falls businessmen Sam Rayburns Sr./Johnathan Ladd combined forces to open the Arlington Hotel chain along with other businesses into what would become Arlington County Hospitality Properties Incorporated (). This company provided services such as rooming houses for soldiers returning home after World War II In 1954, Arlington County merged with Dallas County to form Metro Statistical Area #3.
In 1955, Tower Records moved its corporate headquarters from Irving to Sachse after founder Richard Nixon donated $250 000 towards its purchase."
