Rowlett is named after Representative Rufus W. Rowlett (D-Tex.) who served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1901 to 1903 and again from 1907 to 1911. The town was incorporated on February 17, 1912 and named for Rufus W. Rowlett because he had been its first mayor and first director of public works during its early years. By 1920 it had a post office, two banks, six churches, one schoolhouse, three hotels and thirty-sixresident homes. In 1930 Rowlett boasted nine businesses with a payroll of $4 million and seventy-eight resident homes with an average rent of $2,000 per month! In 1940 only five businesses remained with payrolls totaling $3 million and only twenty-one resident homes remained! The significant decrease in business activity can be explained by the combination of World War II military production shutdowns which took their toll on manufacturing jobs as well as overall declines in oil prices that started occurring soon thereafter which impacted all typesof economic development in the region including industry! In 1951 Rowlett boasted fifteen businesses with payrolls totaling $6 million while only twelve residents lived in residential housing units averaging $1,500/month! A new shopping center was opened adjacent to Highway 183 just south of town along what would later become Interstate 35 South before it was razed in 2013 due to environmental concerns about possible groundwater contamination caused by oil refineries operations nearby at that time. That same year also saw the opening of what would be known as “The Greenway” which connected downtown Rowlett to Lake Travis through bicycle paths and trails providing access for residents living near Interstate 35 South as well as visitors who relied upon automotive access to visit much needed tourist destinations like Austin or Dallas without having to leave their comfortable townsfolk behind! Rowlett was founded in 1876 by John Rowlett and his wife, Sarah. The town was named for John's father, who had moved to the area from Illinois. The first store in Rowlett opened in 1876. By 1890, the population of Rowlett had reached 1,500 people. In 1902, a post office was established in Rowlett and remained in operation until 1916. In 1907, a railroad track was built through rowlet and the town began to grow rapidly. In 1912, Rowlett became an incorporated municipality and got its own library that same year. The population of Rowlett peaked at 3,000 people in 1929 but then declined sharply during the Great Depression. However, it slowly recovered throughout the 1930s and 1940s due to increased development within the town and more jobs available outside of it. By 1960, the population of Rowlet had decreased to 350 people because of changes within the community which led to their exit from local government status; however, they remain part of Texas history as a legacy town.
