Rowlett is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex and its ZIP code 75215. Rowlett is bordered by Wimberley to the north, Springtown to the east, Palestine to the south, and Grapevine to the west. The first settlement in what is now Rowlett was made on May 12, 1879 when James J. Cramer and his wife Anna started a short-lived farmstead called "Cramer's Prairie" just east of present-day Rowlett Boulevard. The name change came about because later that year James' father-in-law discovered oil shale near what would become Rowlett Boulevard. On November 17, 1880 William Denton (1847-1924) found oil shale near present day Valley View Road and named it Denton Oil Shale after himself and another man from Wimberley who had also prospected for oil there earlier in the year. Denton soon developed an Oil rig onshore at Shellfish Bayou which he leased from E&P Company in 1882; he drilled two wells but only produced gas until 1889 when he put into production his third well which yielded crude oil (later refined into gasoline). In 1902 Denton donated land southwest of town to create Trinity Lutheran Church – one of several such gifts during that decade by entrepreneurs and businessmen including John A. Gorman (1858-1933), John Wertheimer (1873-1949), Andrew Carnegie (1857-1938), Rudolph Hoeffer (1872-1945), Julius Rosenwald (1867-[?], 1916)), Charles Goodyear & Co., Ltd., JB Huntley & Sons Machine Works (& others). In 1905 Harry Bauersberger started daycare services for children ages six through twelve years old on Center Street adjacent to Dowling's Drug Store; this became known as "Hobbit Hill". At some point between 1907 and 1908 Jerry Moore added a store block across Main Street from Hobbit Hill Daycare - this became known as "Moore's Block". By 1912 there were three stores: Dowling's Drug Store; Harry Bauersberger's Daycare; and Moore's Block - all within one block of each other on Center Street across from Hobbit Hill Daycare with corresponding entrances on either side of that street corner.
