Rowlett is a small town located in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. Rowlett is named for its founder, Myles M. Rowlett. It was founded in 1881 by Myles and his wife Eliza Rowe. The towndates back to the early 1880s when cattle drives led by Major General John Fetterman passed through the area and local farmers took advantage of the game herds roaming free in these harsh terrain. Cotton farming followed soon after as cowboys turned their attention from roundup to branding and fencing arriving teams of bovines on horseback were introduced into this new territory as well as other goods necessary for market gardening such as seed potatoes, turnips, onions, carrots and beets that could now only be produced by hand or machine with some effort gone into improving transportation infrastructure including a wagon road connecting it to nearby Elmwood Springs. Rowlett, Texas is a city in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 10,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The name Rowlett first appears on maps in 1881 as a small settlement near present-day Grapevine. The land that became Rowlett was originally grant from Mexican President Santa Anna to John C. Frémont and other Americans during the MexicanAmerican War. As early as 1876, there were people living in what would become Rowlett when William Ainsworth built a log cabin on the edge of what is now Elm Street and Prairie Road (now Interstate 20). In 1881, it was given its present name by Wm Hildebrandt who donated some land south of Maple Drive for town growth purposes. In 1907, George Washington Carver laid out a townsite north of Elm Street which included parts of what would become Rowlett proper including present day Elmwood Avenue and Old Hickory Lane between Willowbrook Drive and Grapevine Road (now I-20). When the Cities of Arlington and Irving formed their own municipalities within Tarrant County in 1907, they amalgamated with Rowlett to form Arlington Heights. However, due to lack of annexation petitions received from Rowlett residents after 1908, Arlington Heights never officially annexed into Rowletty until 1927 when it reincorporated as an independent city with its own mayor and City Council A new courthouse was completed in 1911 referendum by citizens of Arlington Heights annexing themselves to Rowletty under the name “Ridgewood” after Ridgewoods development about two miles west on I-20 from where Virginia High School now stands across Maple Drive from ROWLITTOWN The new courthouse served as both our municipal building until 1935 when we moved into our current facility which has been our home since then In 1951 Hurricane Earl made landfall along portionsof Texas coast including deepwater events that damaged many homes along Gulf Freeway extending inland up into Tarrant County . Rowlett was founded in 1881 by John and Fannie Rowlett. The city was named after their home state of Texas, which they had visited while living in Louisiana. The Rowletts were the first white people to live in the area now known as Rowlett. They started a grocery store and built a small house on what is now Main Street. In 1887, the Rowletts moved to their current location, which they called "The White House". They continued to operate their store and house until 1951. From 1951-1976, the town was run by the City Council. 1976-1981 saw Mayor Jerald Witherspoon serve as mayor with help from Vice Mayor Leroy Hinton. In 1981, Mayor Witherspoon resigned due to health problems and Hinton became mayor effective September 1st, 1981. Since then, City Hall has been located at 222 East Main Street while other local businesses have moved closer to downtown including a new library (1996), arts center (2005), fitness studio (2007), restaurant (2008) and housing development (2009).
