Rowlett, Texas is a small town in Waller County, Texas that was founded in 1879. It is the original seat of Waller County and remains its most populous community. The population of Rowlett was 782 at the 2000 census. Today, Rowlett is a bedroom community for the nearby Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The first settlers in what would become Rowlett were farmers who arrived from Illinois in 1879. They began to live on the west side of the Arkansas River, about two miles north of what would become Rowlett. In 1881, they erected a log cabin and named it after their friend and neighbor John Sittlesworth. After years of growth and development in what became Rowlett, Sittlesworth donated land to the county for public use in 1889. When Waller County was created on November 17, 1899, it included all of southwestern Waller County as well as parts of southeastern Travis County and eastern Grimes County (later Hidalgo County). The name "Rowlett" was chosen to honor Sittlesworth's donation because it had been given by him previous year during a state fair held at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport. In 1906, when Rufus Epps Jr., an oilman from Houston bought land near present-day Dayling Road and Industrial Drive for $2 million dollars he saw potential for expansion into eastern Grimes County which then included much of today's Rowlett Community Parkland; however no developments occurred due to lack of interest or funding until 1914 when Rufus' son Edwin purchased another parcel adding even more acreage including much current day downtown Rowlettlea Avenue between IH35W & US 90A Streets - this parcel became known as Edwin Epps Square On October 3rd 1915 Alvin Ailey organized his first black dance performance at Peabody Opera House located then on Commerce Street just eastside of Elm Street across from South Lamar High School This event marks one milestone within embryonic African American culture that quickly spread throughout southeast Texas during early 20th century
