The first settlers in what is now Rowlett were farmers who arrived in 1868 from Illinois. They named their new town for Edwin H. Rowlett, a friend and fellow farmer from Quincy, Illinois. In 1890, the town's post office was moved to its present location and the name changed to Rowlett after Lillie Maud Porter, daughter of Rear Admiral John Porter (1788-1863), son of Colonel James Porter (1751-1826). Commodore David Dixon visitedRowlett on October 11, 1892 while on his way to visit Austin and his forces then under General Sam Houston at San Antonio River Bridge. Commodore Dixon noted that "the people hereabouts are very friendly." The first store opened in 1893. In 1907, Rowlett had one of the first oil wells drilled in Texas when Ewing Gentry leased land east of downtown for $2 per acre to drill gas wells. By 1912 there were three churches in Rowlett: Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church (founded 1886), First Baptist Church (founded 1889), and Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (founded 1905). In 1915 it became known as the "Birthplace of Red Ryder" due to publicity given to an article by Dallas Morning News columnist Sidney Bechet entitled "The Birthplace Of Red Ryder". After World War II many businesses closed down or moved out as production increased along with social changes such as women gaining voting rights and more families moving into rural areas because of better transportation options available outside cities during that time period
