Rowlett is located in Midland County, Texas on the banks of the Red River. The community was founded by white settlers in 1881 and became a center for cotton production. It was renamed Rowlett after W. H. Rowlett, a general contractor who donated land to the town. A post office was established in 1883 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1901. The first school in Rowlett opened in 1886 and remains the only one remaining from that time. In 1902, Rowlett incorporated as a city and began to grow rapidly as a agricultural center. The city limits were increased by 20 acres in 1907 and again by 30 acres in 1912. By 1920, Rowlett had more than 1,000 residents and had built up a extensive downtown area with several large commercial buildings including the original Cotton Exchange Building which still stands today.
