Rowlett, Texas is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 8,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and its sister city, Arlington, TX. The town was founded by John Rowlett in 1881 as a farming community on the banks of the Trinity River. In 1902, Rowlett donated land to establish Arlington National Cemetery and named his new town after himself. The name "Rowlett" has been used by various residents since then including Johnnie Ray Rowlett who made it his home from 1944 until his death in 2007. Arlington became an official city on November 4, 1961 following a vote by citizens of both cities over two years and despite protestations from some residents who felt their town would lose its autonomy if it joined the larger municipality. The annexation process for Arlington took longer than expected because there were many objections from within the smaller city about giving up more rights and authority than they had already enjoyed as part of their incorporation into Arlington National Cemetery (although they did eventually ratify this merger). The first mayor of Arlington wasformer Dallas City Councilman Floyd McKnight while Mayor Harry Belcher served as acting mayor due to McKnight's illness during 2006-2007 season; Belcher resigned effective January 1st 2007 when he was elected Governor Rick Perry's running mate. In 2013-2014 Arlingtons annexed much of neighboring Garland County resulting in a population increase of almost 50%. On October 2nd 2015 with Mayor Greg Stanton taking office Arlingtons voted to annex most all neighboring unincorporated areas making them one municipality with a total population exceeding 10K people which includes parts of Richardson County that had previously been split between Garland and Richardson counties administratively

The first settlers to Rowlett were the Rowletts. The brothers started farming in what is now Rowlett and other areas around their home farmstead. By 1871, they had built a gristmill and began to trade with other towns in central Texas. In 1872, they built a blacksmith shop and post office in what is now the downtown district of Rowlett. They also opened a store on Main Street near present-day State Highway 290 to serve their community. In 1875, the town's name was changed from Red River Settlement to Rowlett after General David Buell moved his army through central Texas during his disastrous campaign against Mexican forces at San Jacinto (1857). General Buell called on all Texans to help him suppress Mexico's rebellion and he ordered his troops into East Texas. Many residents of East Texas decided that name change would be an excellent way to promote business within their new community while keeping its historical roots intact. In 1880, local farmers formed the National Cottonseed Cattle Company Limited which became one of America's leading seed companies with operations throughout much of Latin America as well as North America west of Canada. The company ceased operations in 1986 but its archives are still held by Rice University Library Special Collections Department where they are available for research purposes only! The late 1800s saw several impressive achievements for rowlettsians such as scientist J F McClintock who discovered plutonium Possum Oil Containers While working at Lubbock Laboratories active during this time period Dr J F McClintock: "..made important contributions both theoreticallyand practicallyto physical science" In 1907 Edwin Starr developed an artificial sweetener called stevia which made rowlettsians very excited! He later sold it to PepsiCo Incorporated! Stevia became popularized across America however some rowlettsians felt that it took away from their flavor profile - something that continues today! In 1916 local high school student Arlene Davenport married World War I veteran James Waugh (of Arlington County) who joined her at home after serving overseas with distinction earning two Purple Hearts!!!!!! James Waugh: "Arlene was my wife; she helped me out when I couldn't do anything on my own because I wanted kids".
Since its incorporation as a town in 1879, Rowlett has undergone several phases of growth and development. The early years were marked by a period of consolidation and growth in the local economy. Businesses grew rapidly thanks to the new transportation options that came about with the railroad entrepreneur Dr. James Hogg's completion of the Wichita, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway in 1885. This new line allowed for easier access to markets all over the Southwest, and helped grow Rowlett's trade base significantly. The late 1800s also saw significant population growth due to advances in farm production and ranching activity throughout central Texas. This led to an increase in demand for goods and services from area businesses, which helped contribute to Rowlett's rapid economic expansion over the next few decades. During this time, Rowlett experienced some key changes that made it more diverse and engaging culturally. In 1907, the city started sponsoring summer music festivals that attracted artists from all over the region. This event continued until 1978, givingRowlett a strong cultural presence during what is now known as its downtown core. Additionally, Rowlett began hosting its own annual ice cream festival in 1957 which continues to be one of its most popular events today!
