Rowlett is a small town in East Texas, located about 25 miles northeast of Austin. The population was 2,857 at the 2010 census. Home to the Rowlett Independent School District and its three schools - Wilson Middle School, White Sands Intermediate School and Rowlett High School - the village has been a center for education and industry since it was founded in 1879 by John P. Rowlett. Today, Rowlett is an agricultural community with businesses including a poultry farm, hog raising operations and several lumberyards. The first settlers in what is now Rowlett were farmers who came from Georgia around 1800. It wasn't until 1879 that John P. Rowlett established himself as a landowner in what is now Rowlett County, just east of Austin on the Llano River. The town was named after him - rowlet being the local word for "meadow." By 1888, when the railroad arrived in central Texas,Rowlett had developed into one of the largest towns in East Texas with over 1,000 residents.
