In 1944, Rufus Johnsons Jr., son of Rufus Johnston Sr., opened up his own grocery store on Main Street which soon became an important part of Rowlett's economy. Today, Johnson's still operates as one of Rowlett's mainstay businesses along with several other locally owned businesses including KFC, Dairy Queen and Pizza Hut..
