In 1865, William Prentice moved from Illinois to start a flourmill near what is now downtown Rowlett where he continued to operate it until 1897 when it became part of the Dowling Manufacturing Company Limited Partnership enterprise bought by Wm Merrill Dowling Sr., one of Johnston Forbes Worth's sons from his father's milling business interests which included several cotton mills including those at present day Terrell and Midland Mills along with other mills throughout north Texas and Arkansas . A new mill designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright called Crossroads Mill had been started there only three months prior when he visited during a tour of NW TX industrial plants with Dowling President Alfred Ladd . On October 1st 1916 Rollin’ Hogg donated land at what would later become northwest corner of Pryor Avenue & Main Street for use as an agricultural fairgrounds which have been used continuously since then including hosting state fairs each year from 1951 through 2006 while also serving as home field for both football and tennis teams during weekdays while being used nightly by various concert promoters over time .... rowlettexas

In 1886, the Rowlett Methodist Church was organized and began preaching there. That same year saw the opening of the Butterfield Overlands Railroad line from Dallas to Wichita Falls. This opened up new opportunities for commerce and industry in what had been a sleepy community. By 1910, Rowlett's population had risen to 1,500 residents and it became an incorporated town with its own government. In addition to its businesses and industries, Rowlett also attracted many tourists over the years due to its beautiful scenery and historical significance. Of particular note are two tourist attractions: Fort Worth State Park (founded in 1911) and White Sands National Monument (established in 1912).
