On December 20th 1870 Hurricane flooding destroyed much of downtown Houston including most of what is now downtown Austin with damage estimated at $2 million dollars In 1886 RoundRock lost its status as an independent city when it merged with neighboring Floresville into what would be known as Willacy County; though officially part of Austin all along its history there has been strong resistance from some residents to becoming annexation fodder by other big cities such as Dallas or Houston During World War II many round rock citizens mobilized themselves to help out their local military units through various activities such as working in munitions factories or manning coastal artillery batteries After war ended many people returned home but growth continued until 1990 when Roundsrock annexed Floresville once again making it an official city
