ROUND ROCK, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, on the Rio Grande River. It is located in Williamson County and has an estimated population of 116,362 as of 2018. The name Round Rock comes from a claim by a ranching party led by Captain James Fenton on November 5, 1836, during the Mexican–American War. The first permanent settler in what would become Round Rock was George Austin in 1839. Austin had surveyed land around present-day Round Rock and thought it might be a good place to build a cattle ranch because there were no other settlements near by with that many horses and cattle. In 1840, Austin organized the first town meeting in what would become Round Rock when he proposed that it be called "Round Rock" because there were only 14 miles (24 km) of river between it and San Antonio. The name stuck and was used for all subsequent towns until Williamson County was created within Travis County in 1907. In 1881, Jepson Oil Field discovered oil at Geary Mesa which led to significant development in Roundrock including the founding of Jepson Airfield which still operates today as one of the most important military airfields in North America. The population reached 200 people by 1910 but declined to 100 people by 1920 due to World War I rationing and then increased violence within the community caused by Prohibitionist sentiment among some residents who disapproved of alcohol being sold without a permit from government officials
