In 1865, a company of artillerymen under the command of Colonel John C. Frémont marched into Mexico to take over in support of General Santa Anna's army. After successfully liberating Mexico City from French occupation on February 24, 1865, Frémont and his men were ordered to leave for California by General Santa Anna himself. Mexican forces continued to resist until January 6, 1866 when they surrendered unconditionally at the Battle of Monterrey. The US military took custody of cannons and other arms seized during the Mexican-American War as part of their return policy following the war. These cases would come to be known as "Hardship Cases". The first such case was that involving Captain James Wickersham who had brought a cannon and ammunition back from Mexico in 1846. Another case was that involving Major Samuel Denton who had taken an artillery piece from duty in California during the Mexican-American War. In both these cases, it was determined that there was no legal basis for returning weapons or equipment because the owners could not provide documentation proving they were still useable or had been returned previously without incident.
Round Rock was founded by the Comanche people in 1836. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location on the Texas-Mexico border. In 1870, Round Rock became the capital of New Mexico and remained so until 1912. In 1916, Round Rock was renamed to Austin in honor of President Woodrow Wilson. It served as his principal residence from 1913 until his death in 1927. Austin was then chosen as the new capital of Texas, and Round Rock reverted back to its original name.
