On January 6, 1836, Mexico announced its intention to annex all of Alta California into its federal empire under President Vicente Guerrero. Three days later Guerrero issued an executive order creating Travis County as part of this annexation process. Round Rock was founded in 1851 by the parents of James K. Polk, the first U.S. president to be elected from Texas. The town grew rapidly during the early 1840s as wagon trains rumbled through the area, carrying goods and passengers to what is now Austin. By 1854, Round Rock had a population of about 1,000 people and was incorporated as a town. The townsite was named for a small creek that ran through it, which gave rise to its nickname "The Town on the Creek." In 1861, Confederate forces under General Robert E. During World War II, RoundRock played a key role in providing food for troops stationed throughout North America; during peacetime it also housed a number of government agencies including City Court (later renamed Travis County Courts) and various other offices and buildings used by local government officials until they were relocated to larger facilities around downtown Austin beginning in the early 1960s.
