In 1837, James Houston, an American entrepreneur and land speculator, founded a new town called Houston on the east side of the Brazos River near present-day Interstate 35E. With its spacious lots and clear waters, Houston grew quickly into one of Texas' largest cities. By 1850, however, many Texans were dissatisfied withHouston's slow growth and high taxes. They formed a group known as "The Patriots" to promote development around their new capital of Austin. Led by Mayor James Kenedy (1811-1876), The Patriots began to build what would become Round Rock on land they had purchased from local farmers north of downtown Austin for $2 per acre ($ today). On November 3, 1851 – three days after he took office as mayor – Kenedy announced that Round Rock would be the site for his new capital. He believed that because it lay along both sides of the Brazos River – convenient for transportation and trade – it would become one of America's most important economic centers. This prediction came true; RoundRock quickly became one of America's leading cotton textile towns and was home to some Of the richest people in Texas during its early years. Even so, roundabout ways prevented riches from reaching many residents until railroads arrived in 1870 and 1893 respectively - making RoundRock one of earliest modem city cores across North America
In 1845, the Mexican War ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Texas became a U.S. territory, and the first state in the Union was created. On Jan. 6, 1850, Texas became an independent republic with a president and a unicameral legislature. The Republic of Texas lasted until 1902 when it merged into the United States as part of its annexation process during World War I.
