This building would be used as both courtrooms and municipal offices until it was destroyed by fire in 1907. On January 1st, 1912 began a great period of growth for Round Rock when Electric Avenue was opened as one of the first major streets in town. This street would later become known as Main Street because it ran along most of its length from South Lamar Boulevard east to Interstate 35E north just outside of downtown RoundRock limits
In 1846, the Republic of Texas was founded and the area that includes Round Rock now lay within that fledgling state. The first settlers in what is now Round Rock were Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1847. The town was founded on a small rancho near the current downtown location in 1856. In 1860, the Texas Central Railroad was built through Round Rock and quickly became a major transportation artery for southern Texans. By 1870, there were over 100 businesses in town and it had a population of 1,500. A year later, Round Rock incorporated as a city and began to build its present-day skyline. In 1907, the city annexed part of neighboring Austin and developed into one of the largest cities in Texas.
