Round Rock, Texas (USA) is a city in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 22,871 at the 2000 census. The current mayor of Round Rock is Javier Salinas. It is the second largest city in Williamson County after Austin. The first people to live in what is now Round Rock were the Chisholm Trail Indians. In 1836, an Anglo settler named James Bowie founded Bowie Ranch near present-day Round Rock and named it after himself. Bowie moved his family to what is now Round Rock in 1839 and started a ranch that produced livestock and sold goods from a two-story adobe building on Third Street today known as the Bowie Hotel. In 1865, John Wesley Powell discovered petroleum while exploring for cattle drives through Williamson County and soon developed a small oil lease aroundwhat would become Round Rock. The first oil well was drilled in 1870 by George Stephenson under the name "Cimarron". In 1880, local entrepreneur Fenton Turner bought Great Western Railroad land east of downtown from William Hudgins and built a new town called Timmons which became home to many prominent Texans including senator Sam Houston and millionaire J.P. Morgan Jr.. By 1890 Timmons had grown too large for its founder's original plot of land so Turner reorganized his holdings into an entity he calledthe Municipality of Dallas de la Rio Grande on October 1 worth $5,-000,-$10,-000 cash only with no voting rights or capital stock yet! On November 3rd 1890 Dallas de la Rio Grande organized into wards with one representative each; there were forty but only twenty lived long enough to hold their office! That year also saw ranchers converging upon Dallas de la Rio Grande looking for water power wells they could drill adjacent to their ranches while business men such as banker James Hogg leased tracts of land adjoining City Park layout along 7th Street southwest corner of Guadalupe River making possible homes suitable for families within easy walking distance of storespace where farmers grew cropsand fishermen fished 9 miles upriver

In 1849, a railroad station called "Round Rock" was built on the Santa Fe Trail north of present-day downtown Round Rock with tracks leading to Houston, Texas and Austin, Texas; this became known as "Roundrock Junction". In1851–52 Zachary Taylor served as governor of Texas under Sam Houston; during this time he visited RoundRock and left impressed with its potential as a cattle center.Taylor donated land to the town for a courthouse square and public square; these were completed in 1854. The first train arrival into RoundRock occurred on December 9th 1865 when 4 cars pulled by four horses came through the small town on their way from Dallas to San Antonio via Lubbock Downs racetrack outside of present day Midland County Livingston Parish near Gonzales Louisiana
