In 1861, Confederate forces fired twelve rounds from a cannon at Fort Worth, Texas in order to test whether artillery could be used for battle. The round shot hit an animal on the ground and caused it to Weep; this demonstration led to further use of cannons by Confederate forces. In 1865, bullets were again used in Battle of San Jacinto when Union General James Longstreet needed a way to kill more men quickly without having them bleed out. He ordered his army to fire volleys of arrows into the peaceful town of Pharr until it was destroyed. This event is also considered responsible for the end of the Mexican-American War. On July 21st, 1903, Round Rock residents voted on measure 8 which would establish a city limits amendment that would encompass all of what is now Round Rock and parts of Friendswood and Cedar Park. The amendment was passed with 97% support and became effective September 1stth.

In 1836, the Mexican War ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Mexico ceded Texas to the United States, and in return, America agreed to give up its claims on California and New Mexico. The treaty also specified that Texas be divided into two parts- one would go to Spain, while the other would be given to the United States. The area now known as Round Rock was part of San Antonio County. The first permanent settler in what is now Round Rock was José de Jesús Rodriguez y Ulloa, who arrived in 1795. He founded a rancho called La Bahía del Rio Grande near present day Loop 410 and Pecan Street. The original town of Round Rock was established by some hundred settlers in 1836 when James Bowie settled here with his family from Missouri. The town grew rapidly due to nearby lumber and agriculture businesses which thrived during the early 19th century despite high Maria Hill prices for cornmeal and cotton because of lack of soil resources in what is now Austin County. In 1861, after complaints from other farmers about too much woodchipping on their property withinRoundrock limits, Bowie formed a new village called Bowietown named after himself and 12 others who had contributed land for its establishment including John Wesley Hardin (1803-68), Sam Houston (1793-1835), Stephen Fannin (1807-65), Robert Epps (1772-1851) . A post office operated from 1836 until 1840; it was renamed Round Rock in honor of General James Bowie’s son William Hance's donation of $100 for its construction back at his father's rancho El Dorado around this time also served as a stopover on stagecoaches between San Antonio and Austin City Limits where President Texan George Washington visited during his December 1800 visit
