From this land purchases were made for what would become Round Rock Rancho La Alameda de Santa Fe (later Sam Houston State University), which began operations on October 1, 1850; Strathmore College (now Baylor University), which opened its doors on February 17, 1857; and Rice Institute (now Rice University), which opened its doors on September 24, 1902. Round Rock was founded on November 4, 1834 by James F. Austin and his brother Robert Austin. The town was named after the Round Rock Ranch in Comanche County, Texas that James F. Austin owned. It is also said that the name originated from the shape of a rock near the town's location. The first post office in Round Rock was established on November 3, 1836. On December 17, 1836, Round Rock became an independent republic with its own government and legislature. On February 6, 1839, Round Rock seceded from Texas and became an independent country under John Marshall McAllister as its president. In 1840, RoundRock became one of five counties in Mexican Texas organized as Republic of Texas under General Antonio López de Santa Anna. In 1845-1846, around 400 English-speaking settlers arrived to round out what would become roundrock’s population of 1,500 within 10 years time - part of a wave of Anglo immigrants called "the First Wave".Initially land grants were given to men who landed inTexas between 1830 and 1840; seventy percent went to Sam Houston (the last governor before independence).
