The name Round Rock was chosen because it was on a roundabout that led to several settlers' homesteads around the same time. In 1881 RoundRock elected its first mayor and general manager. In 1886 it became an independent municipality with its own government and police department under the direction of Mayor John Ahern. On November 6, 1907, independence was revoked when the city council voted to merge with Plano (the south side of Dallas). However, on December 11th 1907 a judge issued an injunction ordering that RoundRock remain an independent municipality until further notice; this decision reversed a previous decision by City Manager Willard Waddell to merge with Plano as per plan submitted by developer James J. Brown Sr.. Ahern served as mayor from 1907-1912 and 1917-1920 while also serving as chairman of the city council's finance committee during those years; he later served as mayor again from 1924-1929 and 1933-1939 before retiring due to ill health. In 1939 Rocky Mount Consolidated School District #4 merged into Williamson County which made RoundRock their new county seat. As part of the renaming process for all counties in Texas after World War II, RoundRock's original name was restored - now they are known simply as "Round Rock"

In 1836, the Republic of Texas was founded by Mexican colonists as part of the Mexican-American War. The area that became Round Rock, Texas was originally populated by Native American tribes. In 1834, the first white settlement in what is now Round Rock was established and named Austin. By 1840, over 1,000 people were living inAustin and surrounding areas. By 1850, Austin had grown to a population of 5,000 people. A new town called Georgetown was located to the east of Austin and quickly grew into a significant community with its own school system and businesses. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces attacked Austin while Union forces defended it. The city surrendered on April 14th after three days of battle. The Battle of Austin ended with more than 50 killed and 100 wounded on both sides.
