Rosenberg, Texas is one of the most notable towns in Midland County. The town was founded by Jacob Rosenberg in 1866 and grew rapidly due to its location on the border of both Texas and Mexico. In 1924, Rosenberg became the county seat for Midland County. The community has experienced many changes over the years, but it remains a vibrant community that retains much of its history. Jacob Rosenberg was born in 1811 in Russia to a family of farmers. He emigrated to America in 1836 and began working on his father's farm near present-day Rosenberg. After two years, he joined his father on their farm and quickly learned how to operate a farmstead. At age 24, Rosenberg married Maria Anna Kovacs and started raising children at home. They had six children before Maria Anna died in 1851 during childbirth. Jacob continued farming with his three sons until 1872 when he moved them all to Nacogdoches, Texas where he opened a general store with his son John Milton Rosenberg Jr.. The store prospered for several years but then collapsed due to economic problems caused by the Panic of 1893. In 1902, Jacob Rosenberg purchased 1,600 acres east of present-day Rosenberg from Jugo Ramos de la Fuente (1861-1929). His purchase added an additional 2 miles (3 km) of railroad line making it possible for him to ship goods directly from Vera Cruz, Mexico into Midland County without going through Vera Cruz or Brownsville first. This gave rise to the nickname "The Railroad Capital" because of this development! By 1910, five railroads served Rosenberg: Santa Fe Railway Company; Central Pacific Railway; Houston & Texas Railroad Company; Dallas Union Station Road Railway Company; and Gulf Coast Railroad Company . Rosenbergs built their own schoolhouse which opened in 1876 after purchasing land from James Hogg (1785-1857). The schoolroom was located on what is now Main Street and classes were taught by Mrs. Sarah Bigham (died 1865), who also played an important role in social life within the community . One resident even recalled that Mrs. Bigham would stop by her house “to pick up her hat” if she needed help carrying groceries! A new grocery store opened on Third Street south of present day Park Avenue in 1951 which became known as simply "The Grocery". It remained open until 1978 when it relocated across Park Avenue into what is now Armstrong's Restaurant & Lounge! In addition to its grocery store/lounge combo operation, Armstrong's also held video arcade games such as Pacman!, Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong etc., as well as playing hostess services at local bars including Topix Club & Grill! In recent years they have started hosting live music events such as acoustic shows at theirGFK Live Hall & Dance Hall! Rosenberg was founded in 1859 by Solomon Rosenfeld. The town was named after Rosenberg, a German cattle farmer who donated land to the town. In 1865, Rosenberg became the county seat of Nacogdoches County and remained so until 1900. The first courthouse in Rosenberg was built in 1871 and served as the county seat until 1975.
