Gustavus Augustus continued running the business until his death in 1944. After Gustavusgustavus' death, his widow AnnaMaria took over operations of the store until her own death in 1966; thereafter it continued run by her son-in-law Harry Laughlin Jr., formerly an assistant general manager before he became its owner full time in 1978. The present day structure of the store date back to 1978 when Harry Laughlin Jr.'s wife Katheryn sold him majority ownership interest in the business after her own retirement from active management roles at other stores within the Dallas/Fort Worth area; retailing primarily gasoline stations throughout GreaterDallas (the original supermarket anchors for many years). The community developed slowly because there were few opportunities for agriculture here due to poor soil quality and lack of irrigation systems unavailable at that time on the Texan frontier. The Rosenbergs arrived in Texas in 1879. They were the first white family to settle in what is now Lone Star State. The Rosenbergs were among the earliest settlers of Rosenberg County, and their farmstead was one of the most successful in that area. By 1903, they had moved to San Antonio and became involved in business pursuits. In 1938, they moved again, this time to Houston. There they began a long association with Houston's burgeoning industry and politics. Ruth Rosenberg died in 1978, but her husband Julius continued to live until his death in 1980.
