Rosenberg, Texas is a small town in the Midland County area of Texas that was founded by businessman Julius Rosenberg in 1907. The Rosenberg family has been involved in agriculture and ranching since their founding. The town’s population was 8,569 at the 2000 census. It is located on State Highway 183 about 20 miles (32 km) east of downtown Austin. The town developed around the Rosenberg farmstead, which still stands today. The first store in Rosenberg opened its doors in 1908 and lasted until 1912. A post office operated from 1913 to 1918; it was renamed Rosenberg after Julius Rosenberg Jr., who served as its first clerk. In 1915, Rudolph Rosenwald purchased the farmstead from Julius Rosenberg Sr.; he became its sole proprietor and continued to operate it until his death in 1947. Rosenberg built a small schoolhouse near the farmstead for his students; it burned down in 1934 but was rebuilt soon afterwards and remains standing today. He also waged an unsuccessful campaign for president on two occasions; during World War II he served as an intelligence officer with the Army Air Forces, and again during the Eisenhower administration he worked as a consultant on secretarial staffs at federal agencies. After leaving government service, he bought a small grocery store called Stanley's Super Store across from his restaurant business; this business eventually folded due to economic problems but left behind many Ruthless souvenirs associated with that era such as "the red Ranger" T-shirt worn by actor Tom Selleck at one point during his stay in town when visiting Paramount Pictures studios nearby (Selleck also appeared at a local charity event fundraiser dinner hosted by then- mayor Richardson). In 1902, they bought the land that would become Rosenberg Station, which is now the site of Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum.
