Roma, Texas history begins with the arrival of the Mexican settlers in 1836. They were looking for a place to start a new life and build their own society after being deported from Mexico. The Mexicans called this area “Los Ranchos de Roma” (The Ranchos of Roma). In 1846, one of the Mexican settlers, José María Orozco, founded what is now Roma. He named it after his home town in Jalisco, Mexico. He also built a sawmill and other small businesses in Roma. In 1848, another Mexican settler, Vicente Guerrero, settled here and started to grow corn and cattle. In 1861, American forces arrived in Texas to help end the Civil War. One of these soldiers was John Buford Ballentine. Ballentine recognized that there was potential for business here and he decided to establish a ranch near Rome. This ranch became known as Buford Manor because it was owned by John Buford Ballentine and his family until 1935. In 1935, Mr. Ballentine sold the land around Rome to the City of Austin for $2 million dollars ($102 million today). This gave Austin control over much of Central Texas and made Rome an important city center for many years!
Roma was founded in 1892 by Italian immigrants, and is the oldest continuously populated town in Texas.
