On July 1, 1957, following passage of the Lone Star State Constitution establishing local government within Texas statewide boundaries which applied only to Travis County (Austin), Rome incorporated as its own municipality with a home rule charter that continued to allow it autonomy over its internal affairs including budgeting and political representation without prior approval from either Travis or Austin counties. The town's namesake comes from early settler Giovanni Battista Romano who named his ranch "Roma" for his birthplace in Italy (Rome). His wife Lucia donated some of her roses to be planted at what is now fronting Highway 183/Loop 410 east of Roma's downtown core; these Roses are still grown today and are enjoyed by many locals and tourists alike during blooming season. In honor of Lucia's donation many streets bear her name such as Via Lucia Romana which runs through downtown Rome while other streets such as Via Giovanni Battista Romano lead back out towards Lucia's original property line on routes now running parallel off Loop 410 (formerly called I-10) known locally as "The Rosa Route".

Roma, Texas is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Roma was founded in 1881 by Italian immigrants as a small community on the banks of the Neches River. It later became one of the most diverse and culturally significant communities in Hudspeth County. The first settlers to Roma were Giovanni and Antonio Boccaccio. From 1881 to 1903, Roma had a school board and three pastors who served as teachers and principals. From 1903 until 1953, it was part of Corinth Independent School District. In 1953, it became its own municipality with a mayor and council. In 1990, Roma voters approved annexation by Corinth Township which made it an official incorporated town within Hudspeth County. The last municipal election took place on November 3rd of that year and resulted in the re-election of Mayor Tony Amendola with over 60% of the vote (over 50% for Councilwoman Gail King). On December 12th of that year, Corona Ranch LLC took possession of Roma from Corinth Township after being purchased by Jeff Kappelhoff from his father-in-law’s ranching business chain; this placed Roma under full city government control effective January 1st 2001 Roma is located at (30°50′36″N 95°27′15″W). According to the USGS National Elevation Database, its elevation is 929 feet (291 m). It straddles both banks of the Neches River which forms its border with Corinth Township to the east and west while Trinity Parish borders it to the north According to Roma's civic website: "It [Roma] began as a small community on Decatur Street on what would become known as “the free south side” or bank side of downtown Corinth – right next door to where IMAX movies were shot during their earlier days." As early as 1881 when Italians started moving into town they built homes outbuildings "(quadrifoglio) huts" onto their property which they called Villa Romana or Rural House". This continues today down through even today's streets such as Pecoraro Road/Casa Romana Drive recalling these early years when every home had two bedroom/two bath rooms plus a kitchenette . "These homes were simple but very comfortable due largely to their lack of windows so that all interior light came from outside." In fact many residents still live in these same types homes today! By 1893 there were already six churches in Rome including St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church mentioned above which functioned together like one big parish back then! Churches continued performing services together until 1973 when Rome split because some wanted independence while others wanted merger into larger parishes like Corinth etc... gradually over time each church left Rome altogether becoming an independent congregation again although services still take place at St Joseph’s currently ."
