Roma, Texas is a small town in Kerr County, Texas. The population was 1,811 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Kerr County. Roma is located on the banks of the San Saba River and has a post office which opened in 1875. The Spanish name for Roma was "Tejas". The first settler in Roma was José Azaña who arrived in 1847 from Zacatecas,Mexico. He built a cabin on the riverbank and named it Roma after his home province of Tejas, Mexico. In 1853 George Witherspoon founded Athens Mills here and began to produce cotton goods for shipment to New Orleans. From this early days until Indian removal caused many settlers to leave in search of new land, Roma served as both cultural center and transportation hub for those living near the riverbanks or travelling through Kerr County. A mill race soon developed along the San Saba River where mills were constructed by various companies including J & G Phelps & Co., Fenton Mill Company, Humble Oil Company (later Texaco), Bobcat Gold Mine (later Anadarko Petroleum Corporation), James Crain's Brazos Ferry Bridge Company, Averill Harriman's Santa Fe Railroad (now Old Empire Railway) and others during this time period. By 1901 Roma had become an important freight stop on these railroads with over 100 truckloads hauled daily into town by local farmers and ranchers for shipment throughout North America. In 1909 Roma became part of White Settlement when David Denton purchased 640 acres adjacent to present day Roma from Mescalero Apache Chief Manuel de la Vega y Uribe for $1 per acre ($10 per family). This acquisition created one of history's largest landownerships within Kerr County with today’s private holdings totaling over 5 square miles extending eastward from Rome to Llano City and westward to Floresville/New Braunfels proper covering more than 12% of all Kerr Counties assessed valuation at $27 million as of 2006." Deutsche Bank AG entered into a loan agreement with Denton that provided financial support for development of agricultural production hereon which would lead Eventuallyto Watertown later becoming Romanized as "Roma" due to its growth potential in water technology related businesses following World War II when much material spilled onto the Rio Grande while being transported across thatridor needing relief; German investors desired control over resources crossing their country’s borders so they bought up American assets- primarily riverside towns such as Rome-Angleton Clearwater then annexed them providing annexation papers included promises not only by Deutsche Bank AG but also representatives from other major banks anxious about potential competition but unable or unwilling either actuallyto take physical ownership effectivelyending what may have been some formof cartel arrangementamongst AngloAmerican interestsinvolvedintheearly20thcenturybankingandroductsandlogisticsindustryontheRioGrande.")
Roma was founded in 1842 by the Roma people, who are now known as Latinos. The settlement grew quickly and soon had a school, a chapel, and a general store. In 1845, Roma citizens organized themselves into a town council and began to build their own homes. In 1849, they also formed their own fire department. The town continued to grow and by 1870 it had an population of over 100 people. In 1886, Roma residents erected the first public building in Roma – the Romano-American Hall – which served as the local library until it burned down in 1951. From 1850 to 1957, Roma residents were represented on the Texas state legislature by three members.
