Roma, Texas was founded in 1836 by Antonio Roma and his wife, María de la Cruz. It was named for the Roman god Romulus and Remus. The Roma family first settled in what is now Midland, Texas. In 1846, they moved to Roma County, which is now Tomball. They homesteaded land and started a small cotton plantation. The Romas also raised cattle and hogs. In 1875, the Roma family sold their farm and moved to Temple City where they lived until 1924 when they retired and passed away.
