Rockwall is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas, on the Mexicanborder. In 1840, Houston became governor of Texas, serving until 1845 when he resigned because he didn't have support from the Santa Anna administration for annexation into Mexico as promised. In 1876, Rockwall was founded by John Sitton as a small community near what is now Interstate 10 between San Antonio and Austin; it had about 100 residents at its peak population. A year later it became one of two communities in McLennan County (the other being Waco) when McLennan County was created from parts of Travis, Hays, Newton and Parker counties. When those areas were unified under one government during the 1930s, Rockwall continued to be part of that government; however, its population decreased rapidly after World War II because so many people came out of Japan during that time period to seek work opportunities in North America. In 1969 Rockwall annexed Commerce City which had been established by ranchers east of Rockswell Creek as an unincorporated community; since then Commerce City has grown very rapidly becoming one of the fastest-growing cities in Texas while also maintaining its own government separate from that of Rockwall proper although much interaction takes place between them both). Rockwall is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. It is the county seat of Hudspeth County and lies on the banks of the Clear Fork Brazos River. The population was 926 as of the 2010 census. The first Europeans to come to what is now Rockwall were Frenchmen who landed there in 1693 during their round-the-world voyage. The area that would become Rockwall was part of Sam Houston's Republic during its early days and also served as a staging ground for Indian Wars fought between Texans and Mexican forces. In 1836, Mexico ceded Texas to the United States as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the Mexican–American War. The land that would become Rockwall was included in Hudspeth County when it was formed from parts of Travis and Galveston counties. The first settlers in what is now Rockwall arrived around 1836 by boat from New Orleans via Corpus Christi. They Included James Echols, a blacksmith; his brother John Echols; David Meacham; Samuel Fenton; George Wills Jr.; John Hardesty; James Pruitt; Tom Pemberton; Solomon Pennington (Pennington); Elijah Pope (Pope); Augustus Rankin (Rankin); James Ritchie (Ritchie) ; John Steedman (Steedman). In 1837, Jno Meeks built his home at present day corner Main Street and Hagood Street just north of Highway 377 near Millican’s Mills Creek on what would later be known as Rancho de las Conchas or “Copper Range Road” due to an occurrence where metal ore turned silver near Dollar General Store on FM 620 about two miles east side near today’s intersection Elmendorf Boulevard/Hagood Street). This location became known as Meeksville after him because he had control over most if not all this land which includes present day Rockswold, Woodstock Township and portions including much of present day Floresville south side Highway 377.) It wasn't until 1840 when another white man by the name of Austin Keyes moved into this area from Illinois with his family soon afterwards becoming one of Hudspeth County's earliest landowners with holdings stretching along current day FM 620 just east side today's intersection Elmendorf Boulevard/Hagood Street.) He started out farming but soon realized this land could be developed into a cattle ranch operation while also opening up some mineral rights around nearby Hagood Creek which lead to other ranchers moving onto his property beginning what would eventually become Rockwall Township.- Austin Keyes House located at corner Main & Hagood Streets today
Rockwall was founded in 1835 by James Bowie, who named it for the Rocky Mountains. The town developed around a military post and ranching area that became popular for cattle and sheep production. In the 1860s, Rockwall became a center of violence surrounding the Texas Revolution. After the war, Rockwall experienced rapid growth as a result of its new commercial opportunities. In 1935, James Bowie was honored with a Congressional Medal of Honor for his role in helping to promote Rockwall's development.
